Description

First published in 1996 to celebrate NAIDOC Week, The Indigenous Astronomy Starwheel is a powerful collaboration between Gapingaru Naputa, Elder of the Woorabinda Nation and Gordon Patston, non-Indigenous astronomer and founder of the NSW Astronomical Society.

Blending ancient knowledge and modern science, this unique resource shares Indigenous astronomical stories from across Australia. It features cover artwork by Kylie Russell of the Gamilaroi People and music by Sam Kerr, Indigenous musician of the Wamba Wamba Djadjawurrng People, who performs on didgeridoo and clapsticks.

With permission from Elders of the Woorabinda Nation, Gapingaru’s voice and teachings are preserved here to honour culture and continue the sharing of Indigenous sky stories.

The Indigenous Astronomy Starwheel is a celebration of connection  – between people, sky and story and a reminder that these stories belong to the many Nations who have observed and honoured the stars for thousands of years.
