During the Early Cretaceous Period, between 140 and 100 million years ago, the central eastern part of Australia was inundated many times by marine waters flooding in from the north across the lowest part of the continent.
The marine reptiles of Queensland's inland seas included plesiosaurs, plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, ichthyosaurs and turtles. The most significant Australian discoveries of these animals have been made in north-western Queensland, particularly around the towns of Richmond and Hughenden.
