Precambrian pursuit: Studying stromatolites from some of the world's oldest rocks

Stromatolites are often in plain view on rock outcrops and their columns appear in concentric circles as in this unnamed 750-million-year-old specimen also from near Empress Spring.

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

In 1997, I was with a group of Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) geologists returning from several weeks surveying the Officer Basin – a large accumulation of sedimentary rocks that extends across much of the central deserts of Western Australia. We arrived at a cattle station on the remote Canning Stock Route and after we had introduced ourselves to the station holders a lady politely asked if Dr Kath Grey (the only female in our party) was our cook. We couldn’t help but smile!
