Description

Bounty of an inland sea

Over the years, the Richmond Shire Council’s road base quarries on the Croydon Road (above) have yielded many exciting fossils and provided countless hours of fossicking enjoyment for both local people and visitors alike.

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

It’s not hard to imagine the vast prairies of North West Queensland as the ancient bed of an inland sea. Following the Flinders Highway west from Charters Towers to Mount Isa reinforces this feeling when, a few miles east of Hughenden, you descend from a plateau to the edge of a vast open basin. Endless plains covered by a sea of Flinders and Mitchell grass stretch to infinity before you, broken only by an occasional starved gully dotted by a few coolabah trees. You can drive for hundreds of kilometres across this landscape, through the towns of Richmond and Julia Creek and beyond before the black soil and limestone plains finally give way to red alluvial slopes that gently rise into the heavily eroded ranges of Cloncurry.
